Julie Lietaer took over the family business: "Following in your father's footsteps, you're never truly prepared"

Article

What is the impact of transferring a family business to the next generation? Textile entrepreneur Julie Lietaer (40), who took over the helm from her father in 2022, knows it is not always easy. "You need to be able to communicate very well; only then can you solve problems at their core," she says, talking about this key moment in her life.

Who is Julie Lietaer?

  • Active in family business European Spinning Group since 2012
  • Became CEO in 2022, taking over from her father
  • Founder of sustainable start-up Ariadne Innovation
  • Advocate for the circular economy

How well prepared were you to succeed your father?

"It’s impossible to be completely prepared to follow in your father's footsteps as CEO. But that doesn't necessarily have to be a disadvantage. If you prepare too much, you might ignore your natural entrepreneurial skills. Of course, I gained a lot of knowledge from my father. I learned a lot about the textile market and made many contacts thanks to him, but at the end of the day, you have to do it yourself and find your own way. And it's crucial to leave your own mark on the organisation."

How did that transition go?

"Not straightforward. You need to be able to listen and communicate very well in such a situation. Not only with your family members but also with your employees. If there are problems, you need to be able to 'put the rotten fish on the table,' as we say. Only then can you solve problems at their core."

Is the job what you expected it to be?

"In terms of content, yes. I have a lot of passion for leading people and love to involve everyone in the story. But I also enjoy thinking about growth and innovation. Of course, these haven't been easy years due to one crisis after another. No one could have predicted that."

How has leading European Spinning Group changed you personally?

"It has certainly made me more independent and confident, but it has also taught me to focus more on how I spend my time. For example, I have two young children, so I have to carefully find a work-life balance. Fortunately, I have a very understanding husband who contributes a lot to our family life."
